THE RIGHTEOUS’ REST IS IN JESUS CHRIST: PART 2

 February 29, 2003

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 55:1-7

SCRIPTURE TEXT: PSALM 55:6, 8

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest… I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

INTRO:  If you have ever studied the life of David you would see that he was a man much like us.

He had his high spots and his low times.

In this psalm, it may have been during the time of his fleeing from Absalom, David cries out to God to provide him a place of safety and rest from his troubles.

We, in our Christian walk, faces times when we need to find spiritual rest for our souls.

If we fail to rest our physical bodies they will begin to break down, the same will happen with our spiritual bodies.

We, like David, need to go to God and find a place of rest for our weary souls.

The rest for our souls is not found in this world but in Jesus Christ.

MATTHEW 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

I.  WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESTS GOD OFFERS US IN JESUS?

A.  THE REST OF GOD’S PRESENCE.

EXODUS 33:14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

NOTE:  When we allow God to direct our lives we can rest in His Grace.

JOB 23:10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

Even in the midst of testing and trials we can rest in God’s presence.

B.  REST FROM OUR ENEMIES.

NOTE:  This is referring to sin.  The great enemy of our soul is the devil and when we accept God’s grace He gives us rest from Satan and the power of sin.

DEUTERONOMY 12:10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the Lord your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;

DEUTERONOMY 25:19 Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it…

NOTE:  God did not say that we would not face spiritual battles, but He did say that He would give us the victory and rest when we needed it.

2 Chronicles 20:15, 17 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's…Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.

C.  REST FROM DESPAIR.

NOTE: It is easy to fall into the pit of despair and hopelessness as we consider or circumstances, what we need to do is to turn our eyes back on Jesus.

PSALM 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

NOTE:  When we rest in Jesus, He turns our despair into joy.

PSALM 30:11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

D.  REST FROM ADVERSITY

PSALM 94:13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

NOTE: Although we face adversity in our Christian life, God has set a limit on how far Satan can go.

Psalm 91:1-7 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.  Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.  He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.  Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;  nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.  A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Psalm 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

NOTE:  God never promised us that we would be free from trouble but He is promise that He would provide a hiding place where we could rest in Him.

E.  REST FROM SORROW

ISAIAH 14:3 And it shall come to pass in the day that the Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,

NOTE:  The sorrow and fear of death has been taken away.

1 Corithians 15:55-57 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The greatest sorrow that should be in a Christian’s heart today should be for lost souls.

Psalm 126:5-6 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

II.  HOW DO WE EXPERIENCE THIS REST?

NOTE:  It says,  “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”

   This tells me two things:

v      We must make a conscience effort.

Too many people are unwilling to pay the price of full surrender to Christ.

LUKE 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

NOTE: Jesus had done all the work of Salvation for us, the work that we must do is the yielding of our will to Him and His will.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

v      It requires faith & obedience.

NOTE:  The Children of Israel were kept out of the Promise Land because of their disobedience, which was cause, by their lack of faith.

Isaiah 48:18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

A.  OUR REST IS IN GOD.

2 CHRONICLES 14:11 And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

NOTE:  It is when we allow God to have complete control of our lives that we are able to enter into His rest.

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
