GOD USES BROKENNESS

MARCH 14, 2004

SCRIPTURE READING: ACTS 27:31-44

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Acts 27:44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

INTRO:  One of the most difficult things for Christians to understand is when brokenness comes into their lives.

Each of us experience brokenness, some more than others, the question is not will we experience brokenness, but how will we react when the brokenness comes?

When we begin to experience brokenness in our lives we often cry out to God to deliver us, but God wants to use the brokenness in our lives to draw us closer to Him and to bring Him glory and honor.

The secret to properly handling our brokenness is to put our trust in God and allow Him to work out His plan for our lives through the brokenness that He allows us to experience.

There are several positive things that brokenness will produce in our lives if will only trust God.

1.       BROKENNESS WILL OPEN OUR HEARTS TO GOD’S WORD.

NOTE: Before the conviction of the Holy Spirit, our hearts were hardened by sin and unbelief.

We were like the pathway hears, the Word of God could not penetrate into our hearts like it should.

Jeremiah 4:3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.

Hosea 10:12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

NOTE:  Even as Christian often times our hearts become harden and callous to the things of God and His Word.

We need God’s plow of brokenness to open our hearts to His Word that will plant the seed of truth into our hearts in order to produce the fruit that He desires from us.

2.       BROKENNESS WILL PRODUCE REPENTANCE.

NOTE:  It is when we recognize our sinfulness and His purity that we see sin as it really is and it will brake our heart.

Luke 7:41-48 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.  And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?  Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.  And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.  Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.  My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.  Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

3.       BROKENNESS LEADS TO WORSHIP.

Mark 14:3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

NOTE:  It often takes brokenness to worship God in the way that is pleasing to Him.

Psalm 34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

4.       BROKENNESS WILL BRING US VICTORY AND ALLOW OUR LIGHTS TO SHINE.

NOTE: It is in our brokenness that we totally turn to God for deliverance.

Judges 7:19-20 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.  And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.

5.       BROKENNESS WILL ALLOW US TO SHARE WITH OTHERS.

NOTE:  It is often through our brokenness that others see God and are drawn to Him.

Mark 6:41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

6.       IT WAS JESUS WILLINGNESS TO BE BROKEN THAT BROUGHT US SALVATION.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

EphesIANS 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

7.       GOD WILL USE OUR BROKENNESS TO RESHAPE OUR LIVES.

NOTE:  God will through our brokenness shape our lives into the vessel He wants us to be.

Jeremiah 18:1-4 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.  Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.  And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

8.       GOD WILL NOT LEAVE US BROKEN.

NOTE: All though God uses brokenness in our lives, He will not leave us in the broken state but will provide healing and restoration.

Hosea 6:1 Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

PSALM 147:3 He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

ISAIAH 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

EZEKIEL 34:16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

PERFECT PEACE COMES ONLY FROM TOTAL SUBMISSION

MARCH 21, 2004

SCRIPTURE READING: LUKE 22:39-46

SCRIPTURE TEXT:  LUKE 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

INTRO:  Have you ever struggled with a problem, situation, trial or temptation, longing for peace?

Jesus, while He was in the garden, struggled with humanity seeking to avoid the cross, yet His Spirit longing to do the will of His Father.

   How would you define peace?

What will rob us of peace?

v      Guilt

v      Fear

v      Worry

v      Conflict

What is it that you are struggling with, that robs you of peace?

The world offers us a false peace that will neither satisfy nor last.

Jeremiah 6:14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Jeremiah 8:11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Ezekiel 13:10 Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered morter:

1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

NOTE:  Perfect peace was lost in a garden and was regained in a garden.

It was as Jesus struggled in His humanity and gave Himself completely unto the will of His Father, that He gained peace that allowed Him to go to the cross.

Luke 22:41-44 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

I.  WE CAN NEVER EXPERIENCE PERFECT PEACE OUTSIDE OF JESUS CHRIST.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.

   A.  WE MUST FIRST HAVE PEACE WITH GOD BEFORE WE CAN POSSESS THE PEACE OF GOD.

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

   B.  GOD HAS GIVEN US A COVENT OF PEACE.

Ezekiel 34:25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

Malachi 2:5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.

    C.  JESUS PAID THE PRICE FOR OUR PEACE THROUGH HIS BLOOD.

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Ephesians 2:14-17 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; and that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: and came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

II.  THE PEACE OF GOD IS DIFFERENT THAN THE PEACE OF THIS WORLD.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

   A.  IT IS A BLESSING FROM GOD.

Psalm 29:11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.

   B.  IT IS AN ABUNDANCE OF PEACE.

Psalm 37:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

   C.  IT IS WITHOUT END, LIKE A RIVER.

Isaiah 9:6,7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,

Isaiah 66:12 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

   D.  IT IS BEYOND UNDERSTANDING.

Philip. 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

   E.  IT WILL BRING US TO A PEACEFUL DEATH.

Psalm 37:37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

Isaiah 57:1-2 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.  He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

III.  PERFECT PEACE COMES ONLY FROM TOTAL  SUBMISSION TO GOD.

NOTE: Jesus experienced perfect peace when He surrender His humanity to His Father.

   A.  WE MUST MAKE A CHOICE, EITHER CONTINUE IN OUR OWN STRENGTH OR TURN EVERYTHING OVER TO GOD.

Job 22:21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

NOTE:  There will always be those who chose to reject the peace that God offers.

Isaiah 48:18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

The final decision is ours to make, which will you chose?

Isaiah 57:16-21 For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.  For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.   I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.   I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.  But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.  There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.
