“WHERE HAS ALL THE JOY GONE?”
SCRIPTURE READING: I
SCRIPTURE TEXT: 1 PETER
1:8-9 (GW) Although you have never seen
Christ, you love him. You don't see him now, but you
believe in him. You are extremely happy with joy and
praise that can hardly be expressed in words as you
obtain the salvation that is the goal of your faith.
A man rescued after 30 years alone on a desert
Why does it seem that so many Christians are so
unhappy in their worship and daily living?
PSALM 100:1-5 A Psalm of praise.
a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his
presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord
he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we
ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his
pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and
into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him,
and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his
mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all

I. THE BLESSINGS WE
HAVE IN CHRIST BOTH NOW AND IN ETERNITY.
Our lives have been changed from a life of sin and
defeat to a life of joy and victory.
A. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A NEW BIRTH AND WITH
1 PETER 1:3 (GW) Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ! God has given us a new birth because of his
great mercy. We have been born into a new life that
has a confidence which is alive because Jesus Christ
has come back to life.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
1 JOHN 3:1-2
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath
bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons
of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because
it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons
of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be
like him; for we shall see him as he is.
OUR SINS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN
A Psalm of David, Maschil.
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom
the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit
there is no guile.
INHERITANCE CAN NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY FOR US.
1 PETER 1:4 (GW)
We have been born into a new life which has an
inheritance that can't be destroyed or corrupted and
can't fade away. That inheritance is kept in heaven
ROMANS 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him that loved us. For I am
persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present,
nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor
any other creature, shall be able to separate us
from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our
WE ARE KEPT BY HIS POWER.
1 PETER 1:5 (GW) since you are guarded by God's power
through faith for a salvation that is ready to be
revealed at the end of time.
WE HAVE JOY IN SPITE OF OUR CIRCUMSTANCES
Our relationship with God is not dependent upon our
1 PETER 1:6-7 (GW) You are extremely happy about these
things, even though you have to suffer different
kinds of trouble for a little while now. The
purpose of these troubles is to test your faith as
fire tests how genuine gold is. Your faith is more
precious than gold, and by passing the test, it
gives praise, glory, and honor to God. This will
happen when Jesus Christ appears again.
HABAKKUK 3:17-18 Although the fig tree shall not blossom,
neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of
the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no
meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and
there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will
rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my
II. WHY THEN, DO WE
NOT HAVE THE JOY WE SHOULD?
Peter 1:8-9 (GW) Although you have never
seen Christ, you love him. You don't see him now,
but you believe in him. You are extremely happy with
joy and praise that can hardly be expressed in words

It is because we have the wrong kind of faith.
HEBREWS 11:1 (NLT)
What is faith? It is the confident assurance that
what we hope for is going to happen. It is the
evidence of things we cannot yet see.
We are living by sight faith instead of Godly
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was
not with them when Jesus came. The other
disciples therefore said unto him, “We have seen the
Lord.” But he said unto them, “Except I shall
see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my
finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my
hand into his side, I will not believe.”
We begin to lose our joy when we take our eyes off
the unseen Christ, and begin to focus on the things
we can see, touch, taste and feel.
Faith will lead to unity; sight faith will lead to

When we fail to get what we want we become angry.
EPHESIANS 4:26-27 (NLT) And "don't sin by letting anger gain control
over you." Don't let the sun go down while you are
still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to
Anger in turn
can cause hatred and hatred is murder.
There are two
types of anger:
When we become angry and do not address the cause
of our anger, it will turn into bitterness.
HEBREWS 12:15 (NLT) Look after each other so that none of you will
miss out on the special favor of God. Watch out that
no bitter root of unbelief rises up among you, for
whenever it springs up, many are corrupted by its
NOTE: The root of bitterness takes hold when we are not
trusting God but rather putting our trust in
When we fail to deal with the bitterness in our
hearts it will turn into criticism towards both of
God and man.
To retain the joy of our Salvation we must do two
Look to Jesus instead of ourselves.
HEBREWS 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of
our faith; who for the joy that was set before him
endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set
down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Cut the Rope and Trust Him
Forgive those who have wronged us.
EPHESIANS 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake
hath forgiven you.

“THE LAW OF SOWING AND REAPING”
GALATIANS 6:7-8 (NLT) Don't be misled.
Remember that you can't ignore God and get away with
it. You will always reap what you sow! Those
who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires
will harvest the consequences of decay and death.
But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest
everlasting life from the Spirit.
The story of Ruth is one of the most beautiful
stories ever written.
It reveals the
“Law of Sowing and Reaping”.

She was willing to follow Naomi into a strange land
Orpha was loyal to Naomi but was not willing to be

I. THE LAW OF SOWING
The first law of sowing is that we are all sowers.
time is seedtime and will bring results in this life
and in the life to come.
We are either
sowing to the flesh or we are sowing to the Spirit.
SOWING TO THE FLESH
JOB 4:8 “Even as I have seen, they
that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the
We are sowing to the flesh when we seek to please
ourselves and fail to consider the will of God.
Orpha was unwilling to step out in faith
Lot could only see the well-watered valley of Jordan
Esau only consider his physical hunger
What and how
we sow affects those around us.
HEBREWS 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that
rest, lest any man fall after the same example of
SOWING TO THE SPIRIT
We sow to the Spirit when we seek the Mind of
Christ and seek to fulfill His will above our own.
Some of the
things that we as Christian should sow:
1 TIMOTHY 4:12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example
of the believers, in word, in conversation, in
charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
II. THE LAW OF
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due
season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Once the seed is sown there is the time of waiting
until the seed brings forth its fruit.
takes longer than other to come to harvest.
And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the
vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may
run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for
an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,
and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because
it will surely come, it will not tarry.
For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have
done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of
the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the
precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience
for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
III. THE LAW OF
We can only reap what we sow.
As there are two sorts of sowing, one to the flesh,
and the other to the Spirit, so will be the reaping.
Those who live a carnal, sensual life, must expect
no other fruit from such a course than misery and
Those who, under the guidance and influences of the
Holy Spirit, live a life of faith in Christ, and
abound in Christian graces, shall of the Spirit reap
It is not
always guaranteed that we will reap what we sow in
this life but we can be assured that we will reap
what we sow in the life to come.
ECCLESIASTES. 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not
executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons
of men is fully set in them to do evil.
PSALM 73:1-19 A Psalm of Asaph.
God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a
clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost
gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I
was envious at the foolish, when I saw the
prosperity of the wicked. For there are no
bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
They are not in trouble as other men; neither are
they plagued like other men. Therefore pride
compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth
them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with
fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning
oppression: they speak loftily. They set their
mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh
through the earth. Therefore his people return
hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to
them. And they say, How doth God know? And is
there knowledge in the most High? Behold,
these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world;
they increase in riches. Verily I have
cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in
innocency. For all the day long have I been
plagued, and chastened every morning. If I
say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend
against the generation of thy children. When I
thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their
end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery
places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
How are they brought into desolation, as in a
moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
Hebrews 9:27 And
as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after

The time for sowing in now.
We must be
very careful of what kind of seed we are sowing but
cause in the end we will reap what we sow.
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy;
break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek
the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon
