IN CHRIST’S IMAGE

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 127

SCRIPTURE TEXT: ROMANS 8:29

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

INTRO:  The purchasing or building a house is the largest single expense most of us make.

When we want a house built, how selective are we in whom we hire to build it.

PSALM 127:1-2 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

For both parent and church, the greatest investment we ever make is raising our children.

PROVERBS 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The greatest responsibility we have in regards to our children is raising them in the Fear of the Lord.

EPHESIANS 6:4 (NLT) And now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord.

It should be the desire of every Christian parent and adult to see their children and the children of the church raised to love the Lord and to grow into the image of Christ.

We often start very early training our children to pursue a certain occupation, but how diligent are we at training our children to grow into the image of Christ?

The name Christopher means, “In Christ’s Image”.

There are several ways that we as adults can help the children that come under our care to grow into the image of Christ.

I.  WE TEACH THEM TO LOVE AND CHERISH GOD & HIS WORD.

DEUTERONOMY 6:1-7 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: that thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.  Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

NOTE:  Our children soon learn what we consider important by how much time and money we put into it.

It is when we make God the builder of our home and the keeper of our household that we will prosper spiritually.

PSALM 127:1-2  Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

NOTE: My mother left no doubt how important God was in her life by how much time she spent in God’s Word teaching us and in His House showing us.  She also showed us through her tithing.

ILL: The Teenager and His Sunday School Teacher

II.  HOW WE TREAT ONE ANOTHER.

JOHN 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

NOTE: eight times, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself is repeated in God’s Word.

Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Leviticus 19:18 , Matthew 19:19, Matthew 22:39, Mark 12:31, Luke 10:27, Romans 13:9, James 2:8

ILL:  "Elizabeth, What Will You Do If I End Up Like Granddaddy Someday?"

A Wife With A Gambling Problem

MARK 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

LUKE 17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

EPHESIANS 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

COLOSSIANS 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

III.  WE TEACH BY EXAMPLE MORE THAN BY SPEECH.

1 TIMOTHY 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

A foolish saying, “Do as I say, not as I do”.

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day; I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.

  • Edgar A. Guest, Christian Reader, Vol. 33, no. 2.

NOTE: Children are great imitators.

   They follow bad examples

1 KINGS 22:52 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin:

ILL:  The preacher and Lost Dog.

We need to give them good examples to follow

2 CHRONICLES 17:3 And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;

2 TIMOTHY 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

ILL:  In My Mother’s House, there is God

CONCLUSION:  If we want our children and the children of our church to grow into “The Image of Christ”, we must set the example by loving God, His Word and His Church and loving others as ourselves.

LIFTING UP JESUS

SCRIPTURE READING: I CORINTHIANS 1:18-31

SCRIPTURE TEXT: JOHN 12:32

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

NOTE: The primary task of every Christian and every church is to lift up Jesus so that others will be drawn unto Him.

We are unable to exalt Jesus before others unless He is first exalted in our own hearts and life.

We as individual Christians and as a church collectively must posses a view of Jesus as He truly is and have an attitude of gratefulness for what He has done for us.

HEBREWS 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

How important is Jesus to us personally; how much do we rely on Him, how much do we seek to please Him?

How often through the week do we think of Him and our relationship with Him?

If Jesus is not important to us personally, how will we be able to attract others to Him?

I.  REASONS WHY JESUS SHOULD BE LIFTED UP IN OUR LIVES.

NOTE: It is only we begin to appreciated the things that Jesus has done for us, that we will begin to lift Him up for the world to see.

   A.  THE CROSS - SALVATION

NOTE: What importance do we place on the cross?

Everything that Christ has done for us is centered in the cross.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

It is only through the cross that we can obtain Salvation.

When we begin to promote our church or our organization we are distracting from the cross.

The Church of God, Anderson, Indiana, is unique in membership.

You are a member of the Church when you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.  “Every Blood Washed One” is a member of the Church of God.

   B.  GOD’S PROVISIONS

PHILIPPIANS 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

JAMES 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

NOTE: There are those who call themselves Christian who never give God the praise and glory, they take it all for themselves.

ILL: The Farmer and the Old Field

DEUTERONOMY 8:11-13, 17-18 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; … And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.  But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

NOTE: We need to take every opportunity to lift up Jesus by sharing how He has blessed us beyond measure.

PSALM 103:1-4 A Psalm Of David.  Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

II.  LIFTING UP JESUS IN OUR CHURCH.

NOTE: Some people would say that Jesus is always lifted up in church but that is not necessarily true.

   A.  PROGRAMS vs. THE GOSPEL

What a church puts its emphasis on determines if Jesus is lifted up.

NOTE: There is nothing wrong with programs but when programs supplant the Gospel the church is no longer lifting up Jesus.

GALATIANS 1:6-9 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.  As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

ROMANS 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

   B.  CHARISMA vs. ANOINTING

NOTE: A church that lifts up Jesus desires the anointing above talent and human abilities.

ISAIAH 10:27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

ZECHARIAH 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

   C.  SAINT vs. SINNER

NOTE:  A church that lifts up Jesus is constantly reaching out to the unsaved.

LUKE 15:3-7 And he spake this parable unto them, saying, “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.  And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.  I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”

LUKE 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

   D.  SELF-WILL vs. GOD’S WILL

NOTE: When we stubbornly put our will above God’s will Jesus will not be lifted up.

PROVERBS 3:5-8 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

HABAKKUK 2:2-3 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.  For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

CONCLUSION:  How can we lift Jesus up in our personal life and in the life of our Church?

PRAYER:

·         Prayer of self-examination

·         Prayer of intercession

o        For the move of God’s Spirit

o        For the vision of God for ourselves and for our church

o        For the leadership of our church
