“LEST WE FORGET”
SCRIPTURE
READING: I
Corinthians 11:23-32
SCRIPTURE TEXT: Isaiah 9:6a “For unto us a
child is born, unto us a son is given:”
INTRO:
Too soon we forget.
There are many reasons why our memory fades.
-
The passing of time.
-
The lost of meaning.
-
Familiarity of it.
-
The introduction of something we consider more
important.
-
Distortion of the truth.
ILL:
The Holocaust, WWII, 911
There
is a danger that even as Christians we forget what
Christ went through for our Salvation.
Coming to the Communion Table must be a time of
remembering.
1
Corinthians 11:26
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this
cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
The
purpose of the Communion Table is to remember Jesus, to
meditate upon Him.
There are several things I believe we should
always remember and meditate upon when we come to the
Communion Table.
Paul gave a warning about coming to the Communion
Table in an improper manner.
1
Corinthians 11:27 (NIV)
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of
the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning
against the body and blood of the Lord.
I.
WE ARE ALL SINNERS.
NOTE:
It was our need of redemption that brought Jesus to
earth.
John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might
be saved.
Romans
3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of
God;
NOTE:
It doesn’t matter how long we have sinned or how much we
have sinned, just one sin makes us a sinner.
“It
may not be some heinous deed
That chills our hearts and chokes the seed;
It’s often just a trifling toy
That grabs our eye and steals our joy.”
Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every
one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the
iniquity of us all.
2
Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no
sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in
him.
II. JESUS TOOK ON HUMAN FORM AND NATURE.
Isaiah 9:6a
“For unto us a child is born…”
NOTE:
At the Communion Table the Bread represents the humanity
of Jesus.
Philippians
2:5-7
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no
reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and
was made in the likeness of men:
Hebrews 2:16-18 (NIV)
For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's
descendants.
For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in
every way, in order that he might become a merciful and
faithful high priest in service to God, and that he
might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because
he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to
help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has
been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was
without sin.
NOTE:
Jesus took on human form and nature so that He could
feel what we feel and understand what we go through.
Jesus was born with perfect human nature that had
not been corrupted with sin.
Jesus had to have human nature so He could be
tempted as you can not tempt God with sin.
Jesus had to have human nature so He could feel
pain and physical suffering, hunger, thirst, weariness.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
III. JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD.
Isaiah 9:6a
“…unto us a son is given:”
NOTE:
The Cup represents the Deity of Jesus.
Jesus had to be man so He could die; He had to be
God so that His death would be accepted for the
cleansing of our sin.
There
are many today who wish to rid the thought of the Blood
of Jesus as being what brings us into the right
relationship with God.
Matthew
26:28
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed
for many for the remission of sins.
-
The Blood of Jesus Christ has redeemed (bought back)
for Satan and sin.
Acts 20:28
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the
flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you
overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood.
1
Peter 1:18-19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot:
-
We are justified through His blood.
Romans 5:9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we
shall be saved from wrath through him.
-
We are purged or cleansed from sin through His
blood.
Hebrews 9:14
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the
eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
purge your conscience from dead works to serve the
living God?
1
John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus
Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Revelation
1:5
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and
the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the
kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed
us from our sins in his own blood,
IV.
JESUS WILL RETURN.
NOTE:
As we partake in the Communion Table we are not only to
remember what Christ has done for us, but we are to look
forward to the time He will return.
2
Peter 3:3-4 (GW)
First, you must understand this: In the last days
people who follow their own desires will appear. These
disrespectful people will ridicule {God's promise} by
saying, "What's happened to his promise to return? Ever
since our ancestors died, everything continues as it did
from the beginning of the world."
2
Peter 3:10-14 (GW)
The day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day
heaven will pass away with a roaring sound. Everything
that makes up the universe will burn and be destroyed.
The earth and everything that people have done on it
will be exposed.
All these things will be destroyed in this way. So think
of the kind of holy and godly lives you must live as you
look forward to the day of God and eagerly wait for it
to come. When that day comes, heaven will be on fire and
will be destroyed. Everything that makes up the universe
will burn and melt. But we look forward to what God has
promised—a new heaven and a new earth—a place where
everything that has God's approval lives.
Therefore, dear friends, with this to look forward to,
make every effort to have him find you at peace, without
{spiritual} stains or blemishes.
CONCLUSION:
Whenever we come to the Communion Table we must remember
these truths:
-
We are all sinners in need of redemption.
-
Jesus took on Human form and nature to understand
us.
-
Jesus is the Son of God and He is the only way to
redemption.
-
Jesus will come again to bring judgment to those who
have failed to turn to Him and take those who have
turned to Him to live with Him forever.

“THE
POWER OF FORGIVENESS”
SCRIPTURE
READING: LUKE
23:32-43
SCRIPTURE TEXT: Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for
they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment,
and cast lots.
INTRO:
Have you ever seen anyone in shackles?
They
are able to move about but have very limited mobility.
There are many today who are walking through life
shackled.
There are those who know they are shackled but
fail to recognize the shackles for what they are.
There are those who know they are shackled but
don’t know how to rid themselves of the shackles.
There are those who are shackled and don’t even
know it.
These shackles are made up of two very strong
alloys.
There is only one thing that will destroy these
shackles that hinder and limit us.
FORGIVENESS:
To be
free of the shackles that hinder us we must experience
the power of Forgiveness:
-
The forgiveness of God.
-
Our forgiveness of others.
I. THE FORGIVENESS OF GOD.
NOTE:
The thief on the cross reveals the power of forgiveness.
Colossians 2:13-15 (NLT)
You were dead because of your sins and because your
sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you
alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins.
He canceled the record that contained the
charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by
nailing it to Christ's cross.
In this way, God disarmed the evil rulers and
authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory
over them on the cross of Christ.
A. SIN IS A TERRIBLE TASK MASTER.
-
It will bind and hinder your activities.
NOTE:
Sin will keep you from doing the things God wants you to
do.
Proverbs 5:22 (NIV)
The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords
of his sin hold him fast.
John 8:34 (NIV)
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins
is a slave to sin.
Romans 6:16 (NIV)
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone
to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom
you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to
death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Romans 7:15 (NIV)
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I
do not do, but what I hate I do.
-
Sin will take you where you don’t want to go.
Romans 7:19-21, 23 (NIV)
For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the
evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. [20] Now
if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who
do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: When I want to do
good, evil is right there with me.
But I see another law at work in the members of
my body, waging war against the law of my mind and
making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my
members.
B.
GOD’S FORGIVENESS RELEASES HIS GRACE.
NOTE:
To enjoy the benefits His forgiveness brings, we must
accept His forgiveness.
God’s
forgiveness breaks the shackles of sin.
Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he
removed our transgressions from us.
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are
in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after
the Spirit.
Romans
6:14 (NIV)
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not
under law, but under grace.
CONCLUSION:
Accept God’s forgiven and live within its power.

“THE POWER OF FORGIVING OTHERS”
SCRIPTURE
READING:
MATTHEW 18:21-35
SCRIPTURE TEXT: Matthew 6:14-15
For if ye forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will
your Father forgive your trespasses.

Romans 6:14 (NIV)

under law, but under grace.
II.
OUR FORGIVENESS OF OTHERS.
NOTE:
We need to forgive others far more than they need to be
forgiven.
By failing to forgive others we do two things:
-
We remain shackled by the pains and hurts of the
past.
-
We cannot experience the forgiveness of God.
A. THE SHACKLES OF THE PAST.
NOTE:
When we fail to forgive those who have wronged us, the
shackles of pain, disappointments, hurts, anger,
resentment and the desire for vengeance entangle us.
Acts 8:23 (NLT)
for I can see that you are full of bitterness and held
captive by sin.
Ephesians 4:31 (NLT)
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and
slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior.
-
We are obligated to forgive – whether they deserve
it or not.
-
We are obligated to forgive – whether they accept it
or not.
-
Forgiveness to others is more important to us than
to than to them.
NOTE:
When we fail to forgive others it does not affect them
but it keeps us under the bondage of the past.
When we forgive others it breaks the shackles of
separation and produces unity.
B. IT RELEASES GOD’S FORGIVENESS INTO OUR LIVES.
NOTE:
The spirit of un-forgiveness is like a dam that holds
back God’s forgiveness and blessings from our lives.
Matthew 6:14
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly
Father will also forgive you:
NOTE:
The amount of forgiveness we extend to others is the
same amount of forgiveness we receive from God.
Mark
11:25
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought
against any: that your Father also which is in heaven
may forgive you your trespasses.
Luke 6:36-37
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is
merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn
not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye
shall be forgiven:
James 2:13
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath
shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
CONCLUSION:
When we live in the forgiveness of God the power of His
forgiveness sets us free from the power of satan and
sin.
When
we forgive others we are released from the shackles that
have hinder us for serving God to our fullest and has
kept us from experiencing His blessings in our lives.

THE MARKS OF GOD’S CHURCH
SCRIPTURE
READING:
Philippians 1:27-2:4
SCRIPTURE TEXT: Philippians
1:27 (NLT)
But whatever happens to me, you must live in a manner
worthy of the Good News about Christ, as citizens of
heaven. Then, whether I come and see you again or only
hear about you, I will know that you are standing side
by side, fighting together for the Good News.
INTRO:
I believe that every true Believer wants to be a part of
a church that pleases God.
For a
church to please God, its members must please God.
There
are three marks of God’s Church I wish to share with
you.
-
Godly living.
-
Godly unity.
-
Godly purpose.
I. GODLY LIVING.
NOTE:
We are to live as citizens of Heaven.
There
are those who come to America
for its freedom and benefits but are unwilling to live
as American citizens.
So it is with some who want the benefits of being
a Christian but want to live their life like they did
before.
They worship God on Sunday and serve the devil
Monday – Saturday.
ILL:
It’s like bringing a pig into the
parlor on Sunday and putting a pink bow on it then
returning it to the pig pen on Monday.
God
expects and demands that we live the Christian life
24/7.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are
become new.
A.
HOLY LIVING.
NOTE:
God is more concerned with our daily living than our
Sunday morning worship.
1 Peter 2:12 (NLT)
Be careful how you live among your unbelieving
neighbors. Even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they
will see your honorable behavior, and they will believe
and give honor to God when he comes to judge the world.
NOTE:
How we conduct ourselves outside the church has a great
influence on the unbeliever.
·
In our conversation.
Colossians 4:6 (GW)
Everything you say should be kind and well thought
out so that you know how to answer everyone.
i.
Language
ii.
No backbiting
Psalm
15:1-3 A Psalm of David.
Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall
dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and
worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his
heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth
evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against
his neighbour.
iii.
No Gossiping
1 Timothy 5:13 (GW)
At the same time, they learn to go around from house to
house since they have nothing else to do. Not only this,
but they also gossip and get involved in other people's
business, saying things they shouldn't say.
1 Peter 4:15
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief,
or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's
matters.
iv.
Truthfulness
Psalm 101:7 (GW)
The one who does deceitful things will not stay in my
home. The
one who tells lies will not remain in my presence.
Proverbs 12:22 (GW)
Lips that lie are disgusting to the Lord,
but honest people are his delight.
Zech. 8:16a (GW)
You must do these things: speak the truth to each other.
Colossians 3:9 (GW)
Don't lie to each other. You've gotten rid of the person
you used to be and the life you used to live,
·
In our dealing with others.
Deuteronomy 25:15 (NLT)
Yes, use honest weights and measures, so that you will
enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is
giving you.
Proverbs 11:1 (NLT)
The Lord hates cheating, but he delights in honesty.
Proverbs 20:14 (NLT)
The buyer haggles over the price, saying, "It's
worthless," then brags about getting a bargain!
i.
Honest
ii.
Fair
·
As an example to other Believers.
1 Tim. 4:12 (NLT)
Don't let anyone think less of you because you are
young. Be an example to all believers in what you teach,
in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your
purity.
·
Living holiness in humility.
James 3:13 (NLT)
If you are wise and understand God's ways, live a life
of steady goodness so that only good deeds will pour
forth. And if you don't brag about the good you do, then
you will be truly wise!
·
In preparation for Christ’s Second Coming.
2 Peter 3:10-13 (NLT)
But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a
thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible
noise, and everything in them will disappear in fire,
and the earth and everything on it will be exposed to
judgment.
Since everything around us is going to melt away,
what holy, godly lives you should be living!
You should look forward to that day and hurry it
along—the day when God will set the heavens on fire and
the elements will melt away in the flames.
But we are looking forward to the new heavens and
new earth he has promised, a world where everyone is
right with God.
B.
LIVING A LIFE OF LOVE.
Colossians
3:14 (NLT)
And the most important piece of clothing you must
wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in
perfect harmony.
1
Corinthians 13:1-3 (ASV)
If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but
have not love, I am become sounding brass, or a clanging
cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all
mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so
as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
And if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and if I
give my body to be burned, but have not love, it
profiteth me nothing.
·
Loving God first.
Deuteronomy 6:5
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
NOTE:
Actions speak much louder than words.
·
Loving fellow Believers.
John 13:35 (NLT)
Your love for one another will prove to the world that
you are my disciples."
1 John 4:7-8 (NLT)
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for
love comes from God. Anyone who loves is born of God and
knows God.
But anyone who does not love does not know God—for God
is love.
1 John 4:11 (NLT)
Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely
ought to love each other.
·
Loving our enemies.
Matthew 5:44 (NLT)
But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who
persecute you!
Luke 6:35 (NLT)
"Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And
don't be concerned that they might not repay. Then your
reward from heaven will be very great, and you will
truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is
kind to the unthankful and to those who are wicked.
CONCLUSION:
The marks of members of God’s church are one that seeks
to live a holy life and are filled with love.
