HOW VALUABLE IS THE TRUTH TO YOU?

 

SCRIPTURE READING: 2 JOHN 1:1-11 

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Proverbs 23:23

    Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

 INTRO:  We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  Declaration of Independence

    On July 4, 1776 our nation was formed on this statement.

    During the 50’s we were concerned about our nation being attacked by military forces.

    We felt that if we stood strong military that we would be able to defeat any attack by another country.

 ILL: The Tree on Hwy. 508

    Slowly but surely the heart of our nation is being eaten out by the denial of the TRUTHS that were set forth by the founders of our country.

    Our country was built on moral principles that are no longer held in value by large number of Americans. 

  • Pre-marriage relationships are glorified

  • The killing of unborn babies

  • Births out of wed-lock are accepted as norm

  • Homosexuality is being promoted

 

I. THE CHURCH IS IN A WAR AGAINST THOSE WHO DENY THE TRUTH.

   A. THE CHURCH IS EXPERIENCING THE DECAYING OF TRUTH.

 NOTE: More and more churches are denying the Truths of God’s Word.

   People do not want to stand for the truth, because often the truth hurts.

 John 12:42-43 (GW) Many rulers believed in Jesus. However, they wouldn't admit it publicly because the Pharisees would have thrown them out of the synagogue.  They were more concerned about what people thought of them than about what God thought of them.

    Too many are more concerned in making people feel comfortable instead of preaching the truth in love that will turn the heart for sin.

    When Jesus dealt with “sinner” He always dealt in love it was only when he dealt with the righteous that He spoke strongly.

    B. TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE CHURCH.

 Psalm 11:3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

 NOTE: It is the responsibility of the Church to stand for and preach the TRUTH whether it is popular or not.

 2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    C. THE DENIAL OF TRUTH BRINGS DEATH.

 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

    Satan deceived Eve by getting her to deny the truth that God had said.

Genesis 3:4-5 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

 NOTE: It is a genuine love for the Truth that brings us into a saving relationship with Christ.

 John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

    The more we know the truth the freer we will become.

    D. THE VALUE WE PLACE ON TRUTH

NOTE: The question we must ask ourselves is; how much value do we put on truth? 

  • Are we willing to hear the truth

  • Are we willing to speak the truth

  • Are we willing to stand for the truth

 Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

    The more we seek to know the truth the more we will receive of wisdom, instruction and understanding.

II. WHAT IS TRUTH?

 NOTE: The value we place on truth is dependent on what we consider to be truth.

    A. MAN’S CONCEPT OF TRUTH IS FLAWED AND THEREFORE  IS UNTRUE.

 NOTE:  Man’s concept of truth is based on his experience, intuition or desires.

    Man’s concept of truth is always changing.

   What was true yesterday may not be true today.

    For truth, in the Biblical sense, to be truth it must be unchanging.

    B. GOD IS TRUTH AND THE SOURCE OF ALL TRUTH.

 NOTE: God and truth are inseparable.

Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

 Isaiah 65:16 That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.

 Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

 NOTE: As God is unchangeable so truth must be unchangeable.

   Truth does not change just because our point of view changes.

    As we grow in our knowledge of God our understanding of true may change, but the truth itself remains fixed.

    We must not seek to change the truth to fit our way of thinking but we must change our way of thinking to fit the truth.

CONCLUSION: The Church is built on the Truth of God’s Word and we must never sell it.

 Matthew 16:16, 18 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God… And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

THE TRUTH’S OF GOD

 SCRIPTURE READING: EXODUS 15:1-11

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Exodus 15:11

     Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

 INTRO: It is vital that we hold fast to the Truth’s of God.

    It is our understanding and commitment to the Truth’s of God that will enable us to stand during the times of testing and persecution.

    Our concepts of the Truth’s of God will determine the strength of our faith in Him and our commitment to Him.

    Our understanding of God is of greatest importance because our concept of God will determine our views of the world, of sin, of life and our responsibilities towards God.

    If there is no God then there is no foundation for right and wrong, and our morality would be determined by the whims of man.

    As we grow in our knowledge and understanding of Who God is, our commitment to the Truth’s of God will become stronger.

 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

 NOTE: This was not just written for the benefit of ministers, but each Believer is responsible for what they hold to be Truth.

 I. GOD IS ETERNAL

 Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Psalm 102:12 But thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.

 Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

 Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

 Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

 NOTE: How important is it for us to hold to the Truth that God is Eternal?

    If God is not eternal then where did He come from and who created Him?

    What is the difference between being eternal and everlasting?

    Only the Triune God is eternal.

 II. GOD IS HOLY

    A. GOD’S NAME IS HOLY

 NOTE: Holiness is such an intricate part of Who God is that His very Name is Holy.

    Psalm 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

 Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

 NOTE: Because God’s Name is Holy we must be very careful how we use and treat it.

 Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

    B. GOD’S HOLINESS MAKES HIM MAGNIFICENT.

NOTE: As His power makes God mighty, His holiness makes Him glorious.

Exodus 15:11b …Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

 Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

 Revelation 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

    C. THERE ARE NONE WHO CAN COMPARE TO GOD’S HOLINESS.

 Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

1 Samuel 2:2 There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

 Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? For thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

    D. GOD’S HOLINESS IS HIS VERY ESSENCE.

 NOTE: Unlike the angles and man who were created in holiness, and who have the capability of losing their holiness, God cannot forfeit His Holiness.

 Psalm 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

    E. GOD HOLINESS MAKE HIM FREE FROM SIN

 Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Job 34:10 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

    F. GOD’S HOLINESS IS A DOUBLE EDGE SWORD

             1. Sin will separate us from God.

 NOTE: God’s holiness does not only refer to God being sinless, but it also reveals God’s hatred for sin.

 Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

 Habakkuk 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

    G. BECAUSE GOD IS HOLY, HE DEMANDS HIS PEOPLE TO BE   HOLY.

 Leviticus 19:2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.

 1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

 Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

 CONCLUSION: God would not be Holy if He did not provide a way for sinful man to be restored to fellowship with Him.

    Because God knows all things, He knew when He created man that man would sin.

 Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

 Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

    Thus He invites us to come and be restored to fellowship with Him.

 Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

THE TRUTH OF GOD’S HOLINESS

 

SCRIPTURE READING: ISAIAH 6:1-8

 SCRIPTURE TEXT: Isaiah 6:3

      And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

 INTO: Why is it important that we hold fast to the Truth of God’s Holiness?

    All the other attributes of God are interwoven within in His Holiness.

    When we recognized God’s Holiness we then see ourselves as we truly are.

 Isaiah 6:5 (NLT) Then I said, "My destruction is sealed, for I am a sinful man and a member of a sinful race. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty!"

 Luke 5:8 (NLT) When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, "Oh, Lord, please leave me—I'm too much of a sinner to be around you."

 I. GOD IS HOLY

    A. GOD’S NAME IS HOLY

 NOTE: Holiness is such an intricate part of Who God is that His very Name is Holy.

 ILL: The Jewish people will not say the Name of God.

    The copiers of the Scriptures would use a new pen to write God’s name, then would break it so it couldn’t be use again.

    Why is it that only God and His name is used a swear words?

  • As God’s people we must seek to live a holy life.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Hebrews 12:1-4 (GW) Since we are surrounded by so many examples {of faith}, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up. We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Then he received the highest position in heaven, the one next to the throne of God. Think about Jesus, who endured opposition from sinners, so that you don't become tired and give up.

    You struggle against sin, but your struggles haven't killed you.

 CONCLUSION: God would not be Holy if He did not provide a way for sinful man to be restored to fellowship with Him.

 1 John 1:9 (GW) God is faithful and reliable. If we confess our sins, he forgives them and cleanses us from everything we've done wrong.

 THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER

SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 10:6-16

 SCRIPTURE TEXT: Jeremiah 32:17

    Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

INTRO: No matter who we are, we will all face days of darkness and times of difficulties and trial. 

   Why do some come through in victory while others fail under the onslaught of the enemy? 

   What will sustain during these times? 

   The answer is found in how we handle the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER. 

   Those who believe and hold fast To the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER will come through in victory. 

2 Corinthians 4:7-11 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.  We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;  Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.  For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.  

   Those who let go of the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER will end up in defeat. 

NOTE: The only thing that hinders God’s Power is our unbelief. 

Matthew 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

   The Children of Israel doubted the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER and ended up wandering in the Wilderness for forty years. 

   Joshua and Caleb held on to the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER and received their inheritance in the Promise Land. 

   When faced with difficult situations, where do we place our trust, in the false power of this world or in the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER?

   We wish to look at four aspects of the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER that we need to hold on to during the difficult times of life.

 NOTE: We must remember that the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER will not violate the TRUTH OF GOD’S HOLINESS.

 I.  THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF CREATION.

 Jeremiah 10:12-13 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.  When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

 NOTE: The TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER of creation is the foundation of all the other aspects of His power.

    If God did not create the world, where did it come from and why does God claim to be the creator?

    Doubting the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER in creation is one of the devils tricks to get us to doubt in the existence of God Himself.

 Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

 Nehemiah 9:6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

 Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

 Psalm 102:25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

 John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

 Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

 Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

 II. THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 2 Samuel 22:2 And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

 Job 5:19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

 NOTE: We all at one time or another, face situations where we are unable to overcome, and we need someone to come and deliver us.

    This is when we must hold fast the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 ILL: The three Hebrew Children.

 Daniel 3:17-18 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. [18] But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

    A. EVEN THE UNGODLY RECOGNIZE THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 Daniel 6:16, 27 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee …  He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

    B. WHEN WE ARE FACED WITH THOSE WHO WOULD COME  AGAINST US, WE CAN STAND FAST IN THE TRUTH OF        GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 Jeremiah 1:8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

    C. IT IS OUR FAITH IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF

        DELIVERANCE SIN AND TEMPTATION THE WILL GIVE US  THE VICTORY.

Psalm 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

 Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

 2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

 2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

    D. WHEN WE GROW OLD OR COME TO TIME OF DEATH, WE MUST HOLD FAST TO THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 Isaiah 46:4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

 2 Corinthians 1:10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

 CONCLUSION:  Will we hold fast to the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER or will we place out trust in the gods of this world?
