THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER TO DELIVER

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 34:1-22

 SCRIPTURE TEXT: Psalm 34:19

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

INTRO: Have you ever gotten yourself into a jam and needed someone to bail you out?

Like many of the Psalms, to getter a clearer understanding we must know the situation the Psalm was written about.

David was fleeing from Saul and turned to Abimelech king of Garth for protection from Saul.

 I SAMUEL 21

How often have we looked to the arm of flesh to save us only to find that we have gotten ourselves into greater danger?

One of the great messages of this Psalm is that even though Believers put themselves into grave peril by looking to the arm of flesh as a place of safety, they can turn to the Lord and find true deliverance.

When facing times of difficulty we must stand fast in the TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER TO DELIVER.

 I. GOD HAS POWER TO DELIVER IN SPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES.

NOTE: We must acknowledge that our deliverance comes from God and no where else.

 2 Samuel 22:2 And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

    A.  GOD’S POWER TO DELIVER IS NOT LIMITED AS TO HOW OFTEN.

Job 5:19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

    B.  GOD’S POWER TO DELIVER IS NOT LIMITED BY HOW DIFFICULT IT MAY BE.

 ILL: The three Hebrew Children.

Daniel 3:17-18 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.  But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

ILL: Elisha and the army of Syria.

2 Kings 6:16-17 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.  And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

NOTE: God sends His angels to watch over us.

Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

Psalm 91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Daniel 6:22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

Acts 12:7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

II. THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS TO GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE.

 A.    WE CAN STAND FAST IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE WHEN FACED WITH OPPOSITION.

Jeremiah 1:8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

 B.      WE CAN STAND FAST IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE WHEN WE FACE PHYSICAL NEEDS.

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

C.    WE CAN STAND FAST IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE WHEN WE FACE SIN & TEMPTATION.

Psalm 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

 D.    WE CAN STAND FAST IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S POWER OF DELIVERANCE WHEN WE GROW OLD OR COME TO TIME OF DEATH,

Isaiah 46:4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

2 Corinthians 1:10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

III. EVEN THE UNGODLY ARE FORCED TO ACKNOWLEDGE GOD’S POWER OF

     DELIVERANCE.

Daniel 6:16, 27 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee …  He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

NOTE: It was Daniel’s life style that caused the king to acknowledge God’s power of deliverance.

CONCLUSION:  The key to hold fast and experience the power of God’s deliverance is in surrendering ourselves to Him.

Psalm 34:11-18 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.  What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.   Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.  The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.   The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.  The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.  The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

STANDING FAST IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE

 SCRIPTURE READING: EPHESIANS 2:1-13

 SCRIPTURE TEXT: Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.

INTRO: The understanding of the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE is of vital importance, it is the rock we cling to during the storms of life.

It is also what Satan seeks to destroy.

Standing fast in the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE can be very difficult at times.

The more independent we are the more difficulty we have in accepting the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE.

There are three major thoughts about GOD’S GRACE:

  1. Those who believe they don’t need God’s Grace.

 ·         They do not believe there is God.

·         They do not believe in the reality of sin.

·         They do not believe in judgment for sin.

They believe their good works will save them.

  1. Those who believe they are beyond God’s Grace.

  2. Those who stand fast in the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE.

NOTE: There are three steps in understanding the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE:

  1. To whom is this Grace offered?

  2. Who is the one offering this Grace?

  3. What does Grace do for us?

The second chapter of Ephesians gives us a wonderful overview of the TRUTH OF GOD’S GRACE.

 I. TO WHOM IS THIS GRACE OFFERED?

Ephesians 2:1-3, 12  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others … That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

NOTE: These verses give us a snapshot of the true condition of those who are without Christ.

    A. WE ARE ALL SINNERS

1 Kings 8:46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,)…

Psalm 53:3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

 Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

   B. WE ARE ALL UNABLE TO CLEANSE OURSELVES

Proverbs 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

   C. WE ARE ALL UNDER THE PENALTY OF DEATH

NOTE: The word death means to be separated from the body, or from God, or from both.

NOTE: There are three types of death:

  1. Physical death  Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

  2. Spiritual death   I Timothy 5:6 (NLT) But the widow who lives only for pleasure is spiritually dead.

  3. Eternal death    Revelation 21:8 (NLT)  But cowards who turn away from me, and unbelievers, and the corrupt, and murderers, and the immoral, and those who practice witchcraft, and idol worshipers, and all liars—their doom is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death."

II. WHO IS THE ONE OFFERING THIS GRACE?

Ephesians 2:4-5, 8-9  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) … For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.

    A. THE THRICE HOLY GOD.

NOTE: As wicked and sinful as we are that need Grace, so Holy and Righteous is the one offering us Grace.

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Revelation 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

    B. THE PLAN OF GRACE WAS OFFERED TO US WHILE WE WERE UNWORTHY.

Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

III. WHAT DOES GRACE DO FOR US?

    A. IT LIFTS US UP OUT OF A LIFE OF SIN INTO A PROPER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

Ephesians 2:6-7, 13 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: [7] That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus … But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

    B. IT DELIVERS US FROM THE PENALTY OF DEATH.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    C. IT MAKES US THE CHILD OF GOD.

1 John 3:1-3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

CONCLUSION:  Where we will spend eternity depends on where we stand on the Truth of God’s Grace.

Those who stand fast in the Truth of God’s Grace will spend eternity with Him in heaven, those who refuse to stand on the Truth of God’s Grace will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire.

Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
