SCRIPTURE TEXT: Romans 11:33 (NLT)

Oh, what a wonderful God we have! How great are his riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his methods!

INTRO: What is the difference between God’s attribute of Omniscience (knowing all things) and His attribute of Wisdom?

It is through God’s Wisdom that He is able to properly put into action His great knowledge.

There are those who may have great knowledge but lack common sense (wisdom).

Job 32:9 (NLT) But sometimes the elders are not wise. Sometimes the aged do not understand justice.

Every one of us experience situations that we do not understand nor know how to solve.

It is during these times we must put our trust in the Wisdom of God.

Proverbs 3:5-8 (NLT) Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths.

Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality.

Romans 11:33 (NLT) Oh, what a wonderful God we have! How great are his riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his methods!

1 Corinthians 2:7 (KJV)   But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Deuteronomy 29:29 (NLT) "There are secret things that belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our descendants forever, so that we may obey these words of the law.

Man’s wisdom cannot be compared with the Wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 1:20 (NLT) So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world's brilliant debaters? God has made them all look foolish and has shown their wisdom to be useless nonsense.

NOTE: No one can understand God’s Wisdom.

Isaiah 40:28 (NLT) Have you never heard or understood? Don't you know that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth? He never grows faint or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.

This does not mean that we shouldn’t seek to know God in a deeper and more personal way.

Colossians 1:9-10 (NLT) So we have continued praying for you ever since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you a complete understanding of what he wants to do in your lives, and we ask him to make you wise with spiritual wisdom.  Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and you will continually do good, kind things for others. All the while, you will learn to know God better and better.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (NLT) And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world's spirit) so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

1 Corinthians 2:16 (NLT) How could they? For, "Who can know what the Lord is thinking? Who can give him counsel?"

But we can understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

Proverbs 3:19 (KJV) The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

Jeremiah 10:12 (KJV) He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Psalm 74:17 (KJV) Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

Psalm 104:24 (KJV) O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

Psalm 139:14-18 (NLT) Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—and how well I know it.  You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God!  They are innumerable! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!  And when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me!

NOTE: We are the prize creation of God.

Psalm 8:3-6 (KJV) When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

God created man perfect, yet thought His Knowledge He knew that man would sin.

Romans 3:23 (NLT) For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.

Isaiah 53:6 (NLT) All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the guilt and sins of us all.

NOTE: Before any of this had happened, God in His Wisdom had already set in motion the plan of Salvation.

Revelation 13:8 (KJV) And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Romans 5:8 (NLT) But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

NOTE: If we can trust God’s Wisdom for our Salvation, we can trust Him for our daily walk.

Psalm 56:13 (KJV) For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Jude 1:24-25 (KJV) Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,  To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Romans 8:28 (NLT) And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

CONCULSION: What peace we have in serving the God of all Wisdom.

APRIL 14, 2013

And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

INTRO: The Attributes of God can be divided into three groups.

·         Absolute Attributes (no relationship to His creation)

·         Relative Attributes (in relationship with His creation)

·         Moral Attributes (Attributes of God that we should desire and seek after)

The major reason most people want to get rid of God, is to free them from His Moral Attributes.

1.    Holiness

2.    Love

3.    Justice

4.    Mercy

5.    Truth

Exodus 15:11 (NLT) "Who else among the gods is like you, O Lord?  Who is glorious in holiness like you— so awesome in splendor, performing such wonders?

God’s Holiness is the crowing diamond of all His Attributes.

As His Power makes Him mighty, His Holiness makes Him glorious.

God’s Holiness is the overwhelming message of the Old Testament.

Over thirty times, Isaiah mentions God’s Holiness.

NOTE: Holiness is essential to God.

All other attributes cling to God’s Holiness.

·         God very name is Holy.

Isaiah 57:15 (KJV) For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Psalm 111:9 (NLT) He has paid a full ransom for his people.   He has guaranteed his covenant with them forever.  What a holy, awe-inspiring name he has!

NOTE: One of the Ten Commandments forbids us from misusing God’s Name.

Exodus 20:7 (KJV) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

ü  God’s Name is used as a swear word

ü  False prophets misuse God’s Name

Ezekiel 39:7 (KJV) So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel.

·         He alone is Holy

1 Samuel 2:2 (NLT) No one is holy like the Lord!  There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

Revelation 15:4 (NLT) Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name?  For you alone are holy.  All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed."

NOTE: God can do nothing that would violate His Holiness.

Habakkuk 1:13a (KJV) Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:

Sin of any kind is an insult to God.

Psalm 66:18 (NLT) If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, my Lord would not have listened.

Our sins will separate us from a Thrice Holy God.

Isaiah 59:2 (NLT) But there is a problem—your sins have cut you off from God. Because of your sin, he has turned away and will not listen anymore.

NOTE: Because God is Holy, He cannot allow sin in His presence.

NOTE: All of God’s dealing with man, is subjected to God’s Holiness including judgment and mercy.

Deuteronomy 32:3-4 (NLT) I will proclaim the name of the Lord; how glorious is our God!  He is the Rock; his work is perfect.  Everything he does is just and fair.  He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!

Psalm 36:6 (NLT) Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.

Psalm 119:142 (NLT) Your justice is eternal, and your law is perfectly true.

CONCLUSION: God’s Holiness has provided a way for us to be free from the sin the separates us from a Thrice Holy God.

1 John 1:9 (KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

SCRIPTURE TEXT: 2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJV)

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

INTRO: It is one thing to believe that God is Thrice Holy, it is another to understand how His Holiness affects us.

The Word of God tells us that because God is Holy, we must be Holy too.

God expects and demands that we become Holy.

Leviticus 11:45 (NLT) I, the Lord, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. You must therefore be holy because I am holy.

Leviticus 19:2 (NLT) "Say this to the entire community of Israel: You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

1 Peter 1:16 (NLT) For He himself has said, "You must be holy because I am holy."

NOTE: Holiness is the complete lack of sin or anything that is unclean.

God has a Holy hatred towards sin.

Habakkuk 1:13a (NASB) Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You cannot look on wickedness with favor.

Habakkuk 1:13a (NLT) But you are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil.

NOTE: A light view of God and His Holiness will produce a light view of sin and the atonement.

In order for us to be holy, we must hate the things that God hates and love the things that God loves.

NOTE: Because God is Holy, He demanded that the sacrifice that would cleanse us from sin had to be Holy, without sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT) For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Hebrews 4:15 (NLT) This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.

1 Peter 1:19 (NLT) He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

NOTE: Because God provided the perfect (sinless) sacrifice, He demands that our worship must also be Holy.

1 Chronicles 16:29 (KJV) Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (2 Chron. 20:21; Psa. 29:2, Psa; 96:9)

Throughout the Scriptures, leaven represents sin.

Exodus 12:15 (KJV) Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

Exodus 34:25 (KJV) Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

Leviticus 2:11 (KJV) No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the Lord, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the Lord made by fire.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (KJV) Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Galatians 5:9 (KJV) A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

God does not accept our worship if we knowing know of sin in our lives and fail to repent.

Psalm 66:13-18 (NIV) I will come to your temple with burnt offerings and fulfill my vows to you--vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble.  I will sacrifice fat animals to you and an offering of rams; I will offer bulls and goats.  Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.  I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue.  If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;

2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJV) Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Luke 1:74-75 (NLT) We have been rescued from our enemies, so we can serve God without fear, in holiness and righteousness forever.

NOTE: The Christian’s walk is on the Highway of Holiness.

Isaiah 35:8 (NLT) And a main road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. Evil-hearted people will never travel on it. It will be only for those who walk in God's ways; fools will never walk there.

1 John 2:6 (NLT) Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did.

2 Peter 3:11 (NLT) Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives you should be living!

If we wish to spend eternity with God, we must live a Holy life.

Hebrews 12:14 (NLT) Try to live in peace with everyone, and seek to live a clean and holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.

CONCLUSION:  We cannot obtain Holiness in ourselves, our Holiness is only found in our faith in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:16 (NIV) know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Romans 6:11 (KJV)

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

INTRO: Today we are celebrating a very special spiritual event, Water Baptism.

Water Baptism is often misunderstood. Three major misunderstandings:

v  When you are baptized you are saved.

v  You are being baptized into a church.

v  Water Baptism in not important.

NOTE: Salvation only comes through the cleansing of our sins through the Blood of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 26:27-28 (KJV) And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Acts 20:28 (NLT) "And now beware! Be sure that you feed and shepherd God's flock—his church, purchased with his blood—over whom the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders.

Romans 5:9 (NLT) And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God's judgment.

Revelation 1:5 (NLT) and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness to these things, the first to rise from the dead, and the commander of all the rulers of the world.  All praise to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.

NOTE: As we are not “Born Again” into a local church but into the Body of Jesus Christ, so we are baptized into Jesus.

Romans 6:3 (NLT) Or have you forgotten that when we became Christians and were baptized to become one with Christ Jesus, we died with him?

1 Corinthians 12:13 (NLT) Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ's body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit.

Galatians 3:27 (NLT) And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have been made like him.

Colossians 2:12 (NLT) For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

NOTE: There are those who claim you don’t need to be baptized, but the Word of God says different.

v  Jesus told His disciples to baptize those who believed.

Matthew 28:19 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mark 16:15-16 (KJV) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

v  The disciples instructed the Believers to be baptized.

Acts 2:38 (KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

NOTE: Jesus was baptized in obedience.

Matthew 3:13-15 (KJV) Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.  But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

Matthew 3:15 (GW) Jesus answered him, "This is the way it has to be now. This is the proper way to do everything that God requires of us."  Then John gave in to him.

Matthew 7:21 (NLT) "Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as 'Lord,' but they still won't enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in heaven.

James 4:17 (NLT) Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

NOTE: Water Baptism is more than a physical act; it must be a spiritual work as well.

As accepting the Blood of Jesus Christ for the cleansing of our sins we accept Him as our Savior, in Water Baptism we are making Him as our Lord.

Water Baptism is a public confession of your decision to commit your life to following Christ.

Romans 10:9-10 (NLT) For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.

Romans 6:3, 11 (KJV) Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death...Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

NOTE: This means we no longer live to self, allowing sin to control our lives, but we are alive to God.

Romans 6:14 (NLT) Sin is no longer your master, for you are no longer subject to the law, which enslaves you to sin. Instead, you are free by God's grace.

If we enter into Water Baptism with the proper attitude and faith, we will come out of our watery grave in the power of the Holy Spirit to live a live in victory over sin.

Romans 6:4 (NLT) For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Romans 6:6 (NLT) Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.

CONCLUSION: If we wish to live a life over sin we must not only accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, but we must also make Him our Lord.
