SERMONS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 2014

DECEMBER 7, 2014

“WHEN DID THE CHRISTMAS SEASON BEGIN?”

SCRIPTURE READING: ISAIAH 9:1-7

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Micah 5:2

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

INTRO: Have you noticed that the beginning of the Christmas Season is getting earlier and earlier?

When should the Christmas Season begin?

When did it begin in the first place, and when does it end?

I. WHEN DID THE CHRISTMAS SEASON REALLY BEGIN?

NOTE: What does the Christmas Season mean to you?

The Christmas Season is when we begin to think of what Christmas is all about

For those who celebrate a Christ-less Christmas it begins on some date on the calendar

The real Christmas Season had no beginning, it always was

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

A.     IT BEGAN IN THE MIND OF GOD BEFORE ETERNITY BEGAN

NOTE: God has no beginning

Deuteronomy 33:27a The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…

Psalm 90:2 (BBE) Before the mountains were made, before you had given birth to the earth and the world, before time was, and for ever, you are God.

Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Being that God is eternal, always was and always will be, and that He is perfect and complete; there can be nothing new to Him, therefore the Christmas Season began in the pre-eternities with God

II. THE PROMISE OF CHRISTMAS

NOTE: Throughout the Old Testament we read of the promise of the coming of the Messiah

     A. IT WAS FIRST GIVEN IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

     B. HE WAS TO COME THROUGH THE TRIBE OF JUDAH

Genesis 49:10 (KJV) The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

      C. HE WAS TO BE BORN OF A VIRGIN

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

      D. HE SHALL BRING LIGHT INTO A SIN DARKENED WORLD

Isaiah 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

      E. HE SHALL BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting

II. CHRISTMAS CAME

NOTE: Part of the Christmas Season is Christmas it’s self

      A. CHRISTMAS WAS LAID IN A MANGER

Luke 2:4-7 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

NOTE: This is the fulfillment of Micah’s prophecy

     B. HE IS THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD

Luke 2:8-12 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

NOTE: This is the fulfillment of the prophecy given in the Garden of Eden

      C. HE IS TO BE KING

Matthew 2:1-2 (KJV) Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

NOTE: This fulfills the prophecy concerning the tribe of Judah

III. THE CHRISTMAS SEASONS DOES NOT END

NOTE: For those who believe in the true meaning of Christmas, the Christmas Season does not end.

The Christmas Season is more than the birth of Jesus

   What would Christmas be without?

Ø  Jesus sinless life

Ø  The cross

Ø  The empty tomb

Ø  His ascension

Ø  His return

CONCLUSION: For the true believer of Christmas, Christmas is celebrated every time we partake in Communion

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

“WHAT GIFT WILL YOU BRING?’

SCRIPTURE READING: MATTHEW 2:1-12

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Matthew 2:11

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

INTRO: The birth of Jesus is far from a normal birth:

v  It was predicted many years earlier

v  It was God taking on human flesh and nature

NOTE: The human nature that Jesus took on was the same human nature Adam & Eve were created with; it had no sin.

v  He was conceived and born of a virgin

v  He was born in a stable & laid in a manger

v  Angels announced his birth

v  Shepherd came to worship Him

v  Wise Men came to worship Him and bring him gifts

I. THE COMING OF THE WISE MEN

NOTE: There are several special things about the coming of the Wise Men.

1.       THEY WERE MEN OF GREAT WISDOM

They were the learned men of the eastern nations, devoted to astronomy, to religion, and to medicine.

Those of spiritual wisdom know that there is a God

Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Do we have the wisdom to know there is a God?

Proverbs 8:5 O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

If we have trouble believing there is a God we can ask God for the wisdom we need.

James 1:5 (NLT) If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

2.       THEY WERE SEEKING JESUS

NOTE: They sought Jesus to worship Him

Matthew 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

What is our purpose in finding Jesus?

Do we see Jesus as Someone to worship or do we see Him as Someone to give us whatever we want?

3.       THEY LEFT THEIR HOME TO FIND HIM

It was a long and difficult trip for the Wise Men to come and find Jesus in order to worship Him

Matthew 16:24-26 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

NOTE: In order to worship God we must be willing to leave the things of this world behind

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

4.       THEY DID NOT FIND HIM WHERE THEY THOUGHT HE WOULD BE

5.       THEY SOUGHT HELP IN FINDING JESUS

6.       THEY FOUND HIM WHERE THEY LEAST EXPECTED TO

7.       THEY BROUGHT THREE THINGS TO HIM

v  They gave Him gold

v

NOTE: Gold is a gift fit for a king

v  They gave Him frankincense

NOTE: Frankincense was highly odoriferous or fragrant when burned, and was, therefore, used in worship, where it was burned as a pleasant offering to God.

v  They gave Him myrrh

NOTE: The name myrrh denotes bitterness, and was given to it on account of its great bitterness. It was used chiefly in embalming the dead, because it had the property of preserving them from putrefaction.

II. WHAT WILL WE BRING TO JESUS

NOTE: We can give Jesus the same things the Wise Men did

A.     WE CAN GIVE HIM OUR TREASURE

NOTE: God has given us everything, why do we hold back from giving to Him what is rightfully His?

Malachi 3:8-10 (GW) “Can a person cheat God? Yet, you are cheating me! “But you ask, ‘How are we cheating you?' “When {you don't bring} a tenth of your income and other contributions. So a curse is on you because the whole nation is cheating me! “Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the LORD of Armies. “See if I won't open the windows of heaven for you and flood you with blessings.

B.      WE CAN GIVE HIM OUR WORSHIP

NOTE: There are those who contend that you don’t have to go to church to worship God.

·         Jesus gave us the best example to follow

Luke 4:16 (GW) Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual he went into the synagogue on the day of worship. He stood up to read the lesson.

·         He is alone the only one worthy of worship

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

C.     WE CAN GIVE HIM OUR SERVICE

NOTE: We must be willing to serve God will all our hearts and if necessary give our life for Him

CONCLUSION: HYMN # 263

What can I give Him,

Poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd

I would give him a lamb

If I were a wise man

I would do my part:

Yet what can I give Him?

Give Him my heart

“NOW THAT THE GIFT HAS BEEN GIVEN…”

SCRIPTURE READING: MATTHEW 28:16-20

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

INTRO: One of the great memories of Christmas’ is watching kids open their presents.

They would squeal in joy as they open the box, only to ask, what is it?

Other times they were more interested in the box than in the gift.

And then there were times I found the gift discarded because they lost interest.

But once in a while they would receive a gift that they keep and never give it up and are willing to share it with others.

But never did they leave a gift unopened

I. THE GREATEST GIFT EVER GIVEN HAS BEEN OPENED

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

NOTE: What has the world done with the greatest gift?

A.     THERE ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE GIFT IS

NOTE: Many people are excited about Jesus but they do not know what He is all about.

Because the do not know who Jesus is and what He is all about, they fail to appreciate the gift

Leviticus 12:2-8 (8 day to circumcision & 32 more days for purification)

B.      OTHERS ARE MORE INTERESTED IN THE STORIES ABOUT JESUS THAN IN HIM PERSONALLY.

Ezekiel 33:31-32 (NLT) So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it!

C.     THAN THERE ARE THOSE WHO ACCEPT THE GIFT BUT LOSE INTEREST AND DISCARD THE GIFT

Matthew 13:18-22 (NLT) “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds: The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.

D.     THERE ARE THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER OPENED THE GIFT

Matthew 13:18-19 (NLT) “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds: The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts.

E.       THERE ARE THOSE WHO NOT ONLY REFUSE THE GIFT BUT DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO HAVE IT.

Matthew 23:13 (NLT) “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.

II. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE GIFT?

A.     HAVE YOU RECOGNIZED THE GIFT AS THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD?

John 1:14 (NLT) So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

John 1:29 (NLT) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

B.      HAVE YOU OPENED THE GIFT?

John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

C.     ARE YOU MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE WRAPING THAN THE GIFT HIM SELF?

Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

NOTE: There is a difference between being religious and being a Christian

D.     HAVE YOU LOST INTEREST IN THE GIFT?

Matthew 24:12 (NLT) Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

NOTE: What do we do when we realize that we have grown cold in our relationship with God?

Joel 2:12-13 (NLT) That is why the LORD says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.

E.       ARE YOU SEEKING TO SHARE THE GIFT WITH OTHERS

Matthew 28:18-20 (GW) When Jesus came near, he spoke to them. He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  So wherever you go, make disciples of all nations: Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to do everything I have commanded you. “And remember that I am always with you until the end of time.”

CONCLUSION: God has given us the most precious gift, what are we doing with it?
