CONFESSION WITH REPENTANCE

SCRIPTURE READING: EZEKIEL 18:25-32

SCRIPTURE TEXT: 2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

INTRO: Our country is facing difficult days ahead

There is a great amount of unrest

·         There is death and violence throughout our land

·         There is political unrest and turmoil

The only hope we have is in God

The answer lies within the Church

There are two kinds of Believers

1.     Those that are righteous in themselves

2.     Those whose righteousness is in Jesus Christ

I. THOSE THAT ARE RIGHTEOUS IN THEMSELVES

NOTE: These are those who confess their sins but do not repent

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Mark 7:6-8 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

They put their trust in their head knowledge, and what they think are works of righteousness

They may even be involved with “Christian Service”

Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

NOTE: They had confess the Christian Faith, but had never repented of their sin

Confession without repentance will profit nothing

They confess their sin, but keep on sinning with no remorse

NOTE: Jesus tells the story of the two sons: Matthew 21:28-32

v  One rebelled and said no, but latter repented and obeyed

v  One said he would go but never did

Jesus asked the question; “which one obey the father?”

Confession and belief is easy if repentance is not required

James 2:19-20 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

II. THOSE WHOSE RIGHTEOUSNESS IS IN JESUS CHRIST

NOTE: Not only do they confess they are a sinner, but they also turn away from their sin.

   A. CONFESSION IS NEEDFUL FOR SALVATION

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

NOTE: To be accepted by God, confession must contain three parts

v  Acknowledging your sin

1 John 1:8-9 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

v  Acknowledging Jesus as your Savior

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

v  Repenting of your sin

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

   B. GOD DOES NOT DELIGHT IN THE DEATH OF THE SINFUL

Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

NOTE: Sinful man is without excuse for there is forgiveness with God

Psalm 130:3-4 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

   C. GOD FORGIVES ALL THOSE WHO CONFESS & REPENT OF

        THEIR SIN

Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

CONCLUSION: Confession with repentance is shown in our text: 2 Chronicles 7:14

·         If My people, which are called by My Name:

TRUE BELIEVERS

·         Shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face,

CONFESSION

·         And turn from their wicked ways:

REPENTANCE

God’s promise to those who confess and repent of their sin.

·         Then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land.

GOD’S LOVE

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 JOHN 4:7-21

SCRIPTURE TEXT: 1 John 4:16

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

INTRO: Because Tuesday is Valentine’s Day there will be many expressions of love given

What does the word LOVE mean to you?

We often use the word love to state our feelings towards someone or something.

There are many different kinds of love; we love our pets, our house, our job, friends, our spouse…

Satan has corrupted the word love into lust

To really begin to understand love we must begin with God’s Love

I. GOD’S LOVE

NOTE: God, in revealing His love gives us the example of what kind of love we should have for others.

Love has found its perfection in God 1John 4:8, 16 God is Love

A.    GOD’S LOVE IS GREAT

Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

NOTE: God’s love is great because of Who He is and who He loves.

B.     GOD’S LOVE IS ALL INCLUSIVE John 3:16 For God so loved the world…

·         God is no respecter person

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

·         God’s love is to and for all mankind

1 Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

C.   GOD INSTIGATED LOVE

1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

D.    GOD LOVES US WHILE WE ARE STILL SINNING

Romans 5:8 (NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

NOTE: God loves us while we were un-loveable

E.     GOD’S LOVE DOES NOT END

Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

F.     GOD’S LOVE BRINGS US INTO HIS FAMILY

1 John 3:1-3 (GW) Consider this: The Father has given us his love. He loves us so much that we are actually called God's dear children. And that's what we are. For this reason the world doesn't recognize us, and it didn't recognize him either. Dear friends, now we are God's children. What we will be isn't completely clear yet. We do know that when Christ appears we will be like him because we will see him as he is.So all people who have this confidence in Christ keep themselves pure, as Christ is pure.

II. THE EFFECT GOD’S LOVE SHOULD PLAY IN OUR LIVES

Ephesians 5:1-2 (TLB) Follow God’s example in everything you do just as a much loved child imitates his father. Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for Christ’s love for you was like sweet perfume to him.

1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

A.    WE ARE TO LOVE EVERYONE

Matthew 5:43-44 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

B.    WE ARE TO LOVE OTHERS BEFORE THEY LOVE US

1 John 4:10-11 (GW) This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the payment for our sins. Dear friends, if this is the way God loved us, we must also love each other.

C.   WE ARE TO LOVE THE SINNER BUT HATE THE SIN

NOTE: If God dwells in us we should hate what God hates and love what God loves.

NOTE: If God loved us while we were still in our sin, we must love those who are still in their sin

1 John 4:9-11 (BBE) And the love of God was made clear to us when he sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. And this is love, not that we had love for God, but that he had love for us, and sent his Son to be an offering for our sins. My loved ones, if God had such love for us, it is right for us to have love for one another.

D.    WE ARE TO LOVE OUR ENEMIES

Romans 12:20-21 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

E.     WE CAN’T LET FEAR HINDER OUR LOVE FOR OTHERS

·         Fear of rejection

·         Fear of persecution

1 John 4:18 (GW) No fear exists where his love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear, because fear involves punishment. The person who lives in fear doesn't have perfect love.

CONCLUSION: It is only when we are grounded in God’s love that we will be able to love as God loves.

Ephesians 3:17-19 (GW) Then Christ will live in you through faith. I also pray that love may be the ground into which you sink your roots and on which you have your foundation.  This way, with all of God's people you will be able to understand how wide, long, high, and deep his love is. You will know Christ's love, which goes far beyond any knowledge. I am praying this so that you may be completely filled with God.

“HE IS COMING”

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 24

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Psalm 24:9-10

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

INTRO: I remember getting prepared for a special date and everything I did to get myself ready.

If the President of the United States were to call you and tell you he was coming to take you out to the most elegant restaurant in Seattle, how would you prepare?

ü  Some would do nothing to get ready

ü  Some would put on their best

Throughout the Word of God, the Ark of the Covent represented the presence of God.

Exodus 25:21-22 And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

I. THE COMING OF THE ARK OF THE COVENT TO JERUSALEM

A.    THE BUILDING OF THE ARK. Exodus 37:1-9

NOTE: The position of the Ark in the Tabernacle

Once a year, only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies.  Leviticus 16

B.    WHEN ISRAEL ENTERED THE LAND OF CANAAN, THE ARK OF THE COVENT WAS PLACED IN SHILOH WERE IT REMAINED UNTIL IT WAS LOST.  Joshua 18:2

C.   THE ARK WAS LOST WHEN IT WAS USED AS A GOOD LUCK CHARM BY ELI’S SONS, HOPHNI AND PHINEHS.

 1 Samuel 4:3-11

D.    GOD PUNISHED THE PHILISTINES FOR HAVING THE ARK.

1 Samuel 5

E.       IT WAS RETURNED BY THE PHILISTINES AND WAS PLACED IN THE HOME OF ABINADAB.

 1 Samuel  6:1-7:1

F.     THE ARK REMAINED IN THE HOME OF ABINADAB UNTIL DAVID SOUGHT TO BRING IT TO JERUSALEM

a.    HE FAILED THE FIRST TIME. 2 Samuel 6:1-11

b.    DAVID SECOND ATTEMPT WAS SUCCESSFUL

2 Samuel 6:12-23

NOTE: Many believe the Psalm 24 and 68 were written by David celebrating the coming of the Ark to Jerusalem

There are different ways of looking at Psalm 24:

ü  A historical event

ü  A prophecy of the second coming of Jesus

II. THE COMING OF THE ARK AND THE COMING OF CHRIST

NOTE: As we consider the coming of the Ark we see how we are in the same condition

A. THE PEOPLE WERE UNCONCERNED ABOUT THE

ABSENCE OF THE ARK (GOD’S PRESENCE)

NOTE: The people today are not concerned about God or His absence in their lives.

Matthew 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

The first two verses of Psalm 24 tell us that we need to be concerned about God because of Who He is.

Psalm 24:1-2  The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

B. WHO WILL BE READY FOR CHRIST WHEN HE COMES

a.    No one knows when Jesus will return

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.

b.    Jesus warns us to be ready

Luke 12:40 (GW) Be ready, because the Son of Man will return when you least expect him.”

NOTE: Those who are not clothed in Christ Righteousness will be excluded.

Isaiah 64:6 (BBE) For we have all become like an unclean person, and all our good acts are like a dirty robe: and we have all become old like a dead leaf, and our sins, like the wind, take us away.

Matthew 22:11-14 (GW) “When the king came to see the guests, he saw a person who was not dressed in the wedding clothes {provided for the guests}. He said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without proper wedding clothes?' “The man had nothing to say. Then the king told his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.' “Therefore, many are invited, but few of those are chosen to stay.”

Revelation 16:15 (NIV) "Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed."

Psalm 24:3-6 (NJB) Who shall go up to the mountain of Yahweh? Who shall take a stand in his holy place? The clean of hands and pure of heart, whose heart is not set on vanities, who does not swear an oath in order to deceive. Such a one will receive blessing from Yahweh, saving justice from the God of his salvation. Such is the people that seeks him, that seeks your presence, God of Jacob.

III. JESUS’ RETURN

NOTE: Jesus entered Jerusalem humble and submissive, riding on a donkey

Matthew 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

When He returns He will be riding on a white horse as the Conquering King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Revelation 19:11-16 (KJV) And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

CONCLUSION: The question we must ask ourselves, are we hungry and thirsting for the presence of God in our lives and are we properly prepared for His return.
