WHEN YOU’RE THE TARGET OF MALICIOUS GOSSIP

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 5

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Psalm 5:7-8 (GW) But I will enter your house because of your great mercy. Out of reverence for you, I will bow toward your holy temple. O LORD, lead me in your righteousness because of those who spy on me. Make your way in front of me smooth.

INTRO: Have you ever been the target of malicious gossip?

Has someone trying to destroy your life, both physical emotional and mentally?

·         Because of jealousy

·         Because of a broken relationship

·         Because of a spiteful spirit

How do we as Christians react to this sort of attack?

We often seek to defend ourselves or we reply in kind

King David was experiencing such an attack.

·         David had led Israel to its apex.

·         Israel had become the dominant nation at this time

·         David’s enemy was not from another nation but from within, his own family.

Psalm 55:12-14 (GW) If an enemy had insulted me, then I could bear it. If someone who hated me had attacked me, then I could hide from him. But it is you, my equal, my best friend, one I knew so well! We used to talk to each other in complete confidence and walk into God's house with the festival crowds.

I. THE STORY OF ABSALOM: 2 Samuel 13 - 18

NOTE: He was gifted with remarkable physical beauty.

2 Samuel 14:25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

Absalom was filled with deceit and greed

·         Third son of David

·         Killed his brother Amon

·         Fled to Geshur where his father-in-law was king

·         Brought back to Jerusalem but kept from King David

·         Set Joab barley field on fire

·         Was reestablished with King David

·         Formed a conspiracy against his father David

·         Stole the hearts of the people

·         Sought David’s life

II. DAVID’S REACTION

   A. DAVID SOUGHT THE HELP OF GOD NOT THE HAND OF MAN.

Psalm 5:1-3 (GW) Open your ears to my words, O LORD. Consider my innermost thoughts.  Pay attention to my cry for help, my king and my God, because I pray only to you. In the morning, O LORD, hear my voice. In the morning I lay my needs in front of you, and I wait

   B. DAVID RELIED ON GOD’S HOLINESS AND HATRED FOR SIN.

Psalm 5:4-6 (GW) You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness. Evil will never be your guest. Those who brag cannot stand in your sight. You hate all troublemakers. You destroy those who tell lies. The LORD is disgusted with bloodthirsty and deceitful people.

   C. DAVID CAME TO GOD IN AN ATTITUDE OF WORSHIP.

Psalm 5:7 (GW) But I will enter your house because of your great mercy. Out of reverence for you, I will bow toward your holy temple.

NOTE: At the time this was written you paid honor and reverence to a king.

When you stand before a judge following being convicted of a crime, you stand in fear of the sentence he will give.

Today we are much too casual in our approach to those who serve us (President, Governor, etc.) and especially to God

1 Chronicles 16:25 (NAB) For great is the LORD and highly to be praised; and awesome is he, beyond all gods.

1 Chronicles 16:29-30 (NAB) Give to the LORD the glory due his name! Bring gifts, and enter his presence; worship the LORD in holy attire. Tremble before him, all the earth; he has made the world firm, not to be moved.

   D. DAVID SOUGHT GOD’S GUIDANCE.

Psalm 5:8 O LORD, lead me in your righteousness because of those who spy on me. Make your way in front of me smooth.

Psalm 27:11-12 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

   E. DAVID ASKED GOD FOR JUSTICE

Psalm 5:9-10 (GW) Nothing in their mouths is truthful. Destruction comes from their hearts. Their throats are open graves. They flatter with their tongues.  Condemn them, O God. Let their own schemes be their downfall. Throw them out for their many crimes because they have rebelled against you.

NOTE: David turned everything over to God

Deuteronomy 32:35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

   F. DAVID BLESSED GOD BEFORE GOD HAD MET HIS NEED.

NOTE: He took it by faith that God would intervene on his behalf.

Psalm 5:11-12 (GW)   But let all who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them sing with joy forever. Protect them, and let those who love your name triumph in you.  You bless righteous people, O LORD. Like a large shield, you surround them with your favor.

III. HOW DO WE RESPOND TO MALICIOUS GOSSIP

NOTE: It’s okay to be angry, but we cannot allow anger to lead us into sin.

Ephesians 4:26 (NLT) And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry,

   A. BRING IT TO GOD

Psalm 55:22 (NLT) Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

   B. MAKE GOD YOUR REFUGE

Deuteronomy 33:27 (NIV) The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!'

Proverbs 29:25 (BBE) The fear of man is a cause of danger: but whoever puts his faith in the Lord will have a safe place on high.

Isaiah 26:3-4 (KJV) Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

CONCLUSION: When Satan knocks on your heart’s door with malicious gossip, let Jesus answer.

BECOMING LIKE CHILDREN

SCRIPTURE READING: MATTHEW 18:1-6

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Matthew 18:3 (TLB)

And said, Unless you turn to God from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.

INTRO: The disciples were concerned with who would be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus turned to the disciples and showed them the important question is not who would be the greatest but who would be able to enter into Heaven.

I. WE ARE TO BECOME LIKE CHILDREN

Matthew 18:3 (TLB) "Unless you turn to God from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.

   A. WE ARE TO BE CONVERTED

Acts 3:19 (NKJV) Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

When we repent we become as a little baby innocent

Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

   B. HAVE CHILDLIKE COMPASSION

ILL. The servant girl

2 Kings 5:2-3 (TLB) Bands of Syrians had invaded the land of Israel, and among their captives was a little girl who had been given to Naaman’s wife as a maid. One day the little girl said to her mistress, "I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy!"

   C. HAVE CHILDLIKE FAITH

ILL: The Farmer and His Son

   D. HAVE CHILDLIKE TRUST

ILL: Abraham and Isaac: Genesis 22

Proverbs 3:5 (NIV) Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

II. JESUS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS CHILDREN

   A. JESUS WELCOMES CHILDREN AS PART OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Luke 18:16 (NIV) But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

NOTE: There are those who seek to keep children away from Jesus.

Mark 10:13-14 (GW) Some people brought little children to Jesus to have him hold them. But the disciples told the people not to do that. When Jesus saw this, he became irritated. He told them, “Don't stop the children from coming to me. Children like these are part of the kingdom of God.

   B. JESUS GIVES A WARNING TO THOSE WHO WOULD HURT A CHILD

Matthew 18:6 (NIV) But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

NOTE: Three ways children are hurt:

·         Physically

·         Emotionally

·         Spiritually

Those who fail to bring their children up in Sunday School and Church are hurting their children spiritually.

Proverbs 22:6 (TLB) Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain upon it.

   C. JESUS BLESSES THE CHILDREN BROUGHT UNTO HIM

Mark 10:16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

   D. GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO LOVE HIS CHILDREN

Psalm 127:3-5  Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

CONCLUSION: As adults we must come to Jesus as children

BURIED IN CHRIST

SCRIPTURE READING: ROMANS 6:1-14

SCRIPTURE TEXT: Romans 6:11-14 (NLT)

So you should consider yourselves dead to sin and able to live for the glory of God through Christ Jesus.  Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.  Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.

INTRO: Water baptism is often one of the most misunderstood Sacraments of the Church.

  • There are those who believe that you are not truly saved unless you have been baptized.

  • There are those who believe that you are baptized into a church or denomination.

  • There are those who believe that when a person is baptized it makes them a Christian.

  • There are those who believe that Water Baptism is a matter of choice.

All these teaching are unscriptural and false.

I wish to share what Water Baptism is not and then what it is.

I. WHAT WATER BAPTISM IS NOT.

A.   WATER BAPTISM IS NOT SALVATION.

NOTE: Salvation is only through the Blood of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 1:18-19 (KJV) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

1 John 1:7, 9 (KJV) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin … If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we say that Water Baptism is needed to complete our Salvation, then we are saying the Blood of Jesus Christ was not enough.

B.    BIBLICAL BAPTISM IS NOT BEING BAPTIZED INTO A CHURCH OR DENOMINATION.

Romans 6:3 (KJV) Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

NOTE: Water Baptism is not just a physical experience it must be a spiritual commitment in making Jesus not only Savior but also Lord.

NOTE: A person can be baptized into a local congregation without being baptized in the Christ.

C.   A PERSON DOSE NOT BECOME A CHRISTIAN JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE BAPTIZED.

NOTE: Baptism must follow Salvation; you do not bury someone before they are dead.

Mark 16:16 (NLT) Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.

Acts 2:38 (NLT) Peter replied, "Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

D.   WATER BAPTISM IS NOT AN OPTION WE CAN PICK AND CHOOSE.

NOTE: Jesus commanded His disciples to baptize all those who became Believers.

Matthew 28:19 (NLT) Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

II. WHAT WATER BAPTISM IS.

NOTE: As Salvation removes the penalty of sin, Water Baptism removes the power of sin, and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to live victorious over sin.

Colossians 2:12 (NLT) For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

A.    WATER BAPTISM IS THE SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD AND SIN.

NOTE: By being baptized into Jesus we are making Him Lord and Master of our life and we no longer seeking to please ourselves but we seeking to please Him.

1 John 2:15-17 (NIV) Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

We are dead to the world but alive to Christ.

B.     WATER BAPTISM IS AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE.

Matthew 7:21 (NLT) "Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as 'Lord,' but they still won't enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in heaven.

James 4:17 (NLT) Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

C.    WATER BAPTISM IS A SYMBOL OF OUR COMMITMENT TO CHRIST.

Romans 10:9-10 (NIV) That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Mark 8:38 (KJV) Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

D.    WATER BAPTISM IS BEING BAPTIZED INTO JESUS CHRIST.

NOTE: The Greek word us for baptism throughout the New Testament is, “bapitzo” which means, “to immerse”.

   Jesus was immersed.

Matthew 3:16 (KJV) And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

NOTE: The mode of Baptism is not nearly as important as the attitude and spiritual condition of the one being baptized.

Romans 6:3-6 (NIV) Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.  For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--

Romans 8:11 (NLT) The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you.

CONCLUSION: Water Baptism is a very essential part of our Christian walk with God and if we fail to obey His Word in following Him is Water Baptism we are denying ourselves the power to live a victorious Christian life.
